In a previous blog post, we covered various ways to attract new listeners and grow your internet radio station; one of those ways was to start blogging. If you want to try that out, but don’t know where to start, this blog post is for you!

Why your internet station needs a blog

When it comes to online radio, a blog can be a powerful way to engage and entertain your existing audience but also to connect with new listeners and promote your station. In this post, we’ll discuss tips for starting a blog and creating content that will help your station grow. We’ll also talk about what to write about, and how to keep your blog fresh and interesting. Finally, we’ll provide some resources to help you get started.

1. How to come up with topic ideas for blog posts

You first need to figure out what your blog will be about. One thing you definitely need to do is make your blog relevant to your radio. For example, if your internet radio programming is all about Jazz, it won’t make much sense to blog about Pop. Your blog should be your written representation of your radio station style and content. Here are some ideas about what to write about:

  • Music industry news
  • Album reviews
  • World news
  • Industry news and gossips
  • Playlists of the month
  • Concert reviews
  • Interviews with singers and musicians you invite to your shows
  • History of music
  • Music festivals
  • Books that music lovers should read

If you’re stumped for blog topic ideas, consider ideas from your own life. Don’t be afraid to blog about a topic that hits close to home; it’s important to write about things that interest you because this passion will come through in your blogs. There are various online tools that can help you find inspiration and topic ideas on what to write about. Here are five content idea generators:

I’ve recently launched an internet radio station for my website Soundhealing.gr focused on sound healing, and meditation music. I knew that an effective way to attract new listeners is through a blog where I would write content related to sound healing, and sound meditation. The first thing I did is to write down topic ideas that I would find interesting as a reader. I also did a Google search to find topic ideas according to what people are looking for in relation to sound healing. I then used Google Adwords’ Keyword Planner to narrow down the topics to the ones which would have potential organic traffic. The idea is that people who are interested in learning about sound healing, would end up on my blog and hopefully would want to listen to the station. I started seeing an increase in organic traffic 1 month after launching the blog.

This post about how to come up with topic ideas for your talk radio show might give you some extra ideas on finding interesting things to write about.

Extra tip: You can use social media polls to ask your fans what type of topics they want to see on your blog.

2. Finding your voice

Finding your blog’s voice is an important step in building a successful blog. Your posts should have a distinct style, and your content should not be boring or copy-and-pasted from other sources. Try and think about matching the tone of your blog with the voice of your internet radio show.

3. How regularly should you post?

Frequency of posting is totally up to you. However, if you aim to have a successful blog that gets organic traffic (which means readers who could become radio listeners) you will need to blog regularly. Aim to blog at least once a week, if not more. Many content marketers who aim for increased awareness blog daily, but you can blog less frequently and still generate traffic and engagement. You just need a content plan (weekly or monthly), write engaging content, and never give up the idea of writing. Trust me, it will pay off the moment that you will see your organic traffic and listenership rising!

4. How to engage your blog audience

You should engage and interact with blog readers through the post’s comments section or on social media. This will help build a following for your blog. Readers always appreciate being acknowledged and seeing a reply from you will give them a reason to be more engaged and comment again in the future. Also, lots of times those comments will give you inspiration for future blog post ideas. Keep in mind that when running a blog, you’ll want to take comments and interaction into account so that you can write blog posts that will generate interest and discussion. Another potential way to interact with your blog audience is through quizzes. Quizzes can be highly engaging and interactive, allowing the active participation of readers. You can create quizzes related to your blog topics or content, offering your audience a chance to test their knowledge, discover something new, or even just have fun.

5. Accept guest post contributors

Another great way to engage your audience is to ask them to share their own content and publish it on your blog as a guest post. You can let people know through your radio and website that you are up for guest contributors. Obviously, you can choose what content to publish. No one obliges you to publish all guest content you receive. On your website, create a blog post category for these guest contributions. After getting their post published on your blog, guest contributors will likely want to share this great news with their friends on social media, which means extra exposure and potential readers-listeners for your station!

6. How to build blog traffic

Regardless of how regularly you blog, blog promotion is key for building traffic and engagement. Blog promotion includes search engine optimisation (SEO), blog post promotion on social media, guest blog promotion, and blog post pay-per-click advertisements. It won’t make much sense to create content that no one reads. Therefore, you will need to spread the word about it. You can of course let your listeners know about your new blog posts through your radio show and share your posts on your social media channels. You can also host webinars or online events related to your blog content to promote your blog.

Another great way to get more views and readers is to join relevant Facebook groups and communities and share your posts there. Finally, you can use platforms like Reddit and Medium to reach a wider audience.

7. How to monetise a blog for online radio

Monetising blog content can be done in a few different ways. You can blog about particular music albums that you play on your radio and link to music play stores where your audience can purchase that album. There are play stores that provide affiliate partnerships to publishers like yourself. You will get a commission for every reader of your blog who clicks on that link and makes a purchase. You could also use blog advertisements to generate revenue through blog visits. You can sign up to Google Adsense and use their service to feature banner ads on your blog and get paid every time a reader clicks on those ads. Here are some more ways to make money from your station.

8.How to take advantage of SEO to bring organic traffic to your blog

SEO is the way to make your website and blog rank on search engines. You can check out this guide to find how it works. The truth is that it’s not that easy to implement a successful SEO strategy if you’re not familiar with the subject and the techniques. However, I wasn’t either before starting my first blog and it didn’t take long until I started seeing a spike in organic traffic on my blog. If you want to take advantage of SEO, you will need to know some basic concepts and ranking factors, and always keep in mind those key factors whenever writing a blog post.

Be sure to make use of keywords and SEO techniques so that your blog posts can be found by listeners online. Here are some blog post SEO tips to get you started:

  • The easiest way to find the right keywords to use in your copy is through this simple and free browser extension called Keywords Everywhere. You will just need to search for the topic of the blog post you want to write about in the search engine and Keywords Everywhere will show you monthly search volume metrics right inside the search pages.
  • If you want to dive deeper into keywords research and analysis you can use Google Adwords’ Keywords Planner tool, which is also free to use.

9. Use Canva for blog design

Canva is a cool website where you can create nice design elements for your blog, like spot banners. It offers hundreds of beautiful templates to use so that you can create a beautiful banner without having design knowledge. Just sign up for a free account and look for blog graphics.

10. Stay Informed with Industry Trends and Current Events

By staying informed about the latest industry trends and events, you can discover new topics of interest, predict changes, and offer timely insights to your readers. Engaging with industry news also positions you as a knowledgeable authority, establishing you as a credible source and attracting a broader audience. Regularly monitoring trends helps you adapt your content strategy continuously. Sharing knowledge and updates about current events keeps your content fresh and up-to-date, improving loyalty among your audience who rely on your blog for valuable perspectives on the latest news.

And there you have it, you are now ready to start a blog to promote your internet radio programme!

The post 5 Must-Have Features in Online Radio Software appeared first on Airtime Pro.

]]>
If you’re a radio DJ or starting your own online radio station, it’s crucial to choose the right radio software to bring your vision to life. From my past experience with different online radio software platforms, I’ve learned that there are several key features that are essential for a successful online station.

Reliability:

First and foremost, software reliability is essential. Without a reliable system, nothing else matters. Your online radio station needs to be running 24/7, so it’s crucial to choose software that is dependable and has a solid reputation. There’s nothing worse than your station going down in the middle of a show or losing listeners due to buffering or connection issues. Take the time to research and read user reviews on review platforms like Capterra, Trustpilot, and G2 before committing to a platform.

Automation:

Another key feature to consider is automation. Before the recent arrival of efficient options, I spent hours configuring my shows manually. Having the ability to automate certain aspects of your online radio station can be a lifesaver. Look for software that has robust automation features such as scheduling playlists, repeating calendar shows, rotations, auto DJ, and automatic failover in case of connection issues.

Customization:

Customization of your station page is another important feature to consider. Making your online radio station unique will set it apart from the competition. Look for software that gives you the ability to customize your page theme and interface, and to add a logo and branding. Your listeners will appreciate the personal touch. Remember to customize your social media channels as well to ensure brand consistency.

Interface:

Having a user-friendly interface is also important. Running your online radio station shouldn’t give you a headache. Therefore, pick software like Airtime Pro that has an intuitive and user-friendly interface, making it simple to upload music, schedule playlists, and manage your station from one central location.

Integration:

Finally, integration with other platforms will help you reach as many listeners as possible. Look for software that integrates with popular platforms like iTunes, TuneIn, and Spotify, allowing your listeners to find and tune into your station with ease. Also, if you intend to live broadcast, be sure that your software can be easily integrated with third-party broadcasting apps like MIXX, BUTT, SAM Broadcaster, and Nicecast.

Other things to consider

In addition to these key features, there are a few other factors to keep in mind when choosing online radio software. For example, it’s important to consider the type of support and resources that the software provider offers. Look for a platform that provides helpful documentation, tutorials, and support options to help you get the most out of your software.

Finally (and this probably goes without saying), consider what you get for your money. While there are plenty of cheap options out there, it’s often worth investing in a software platform that provides more robust features and support. Just be sure to factor in the cost of the software when planning your budget.

By focusing on these features and factors, you’ll be well on your way to creating a successful and unique online radio station that your listeners will love. At Airtime Pro, we’re committed to providing online radio software that makes it easy for you to create and manage your own online radio station.

Try it out for yourself and see why Airtime Pro is the perfect platform for your online radio needs!

As an internet radio host, keeping your listeners engaged can be a challenge in the highly competitive online radio space. But no worries – there are clever ways to make your show stand out and keep your listeners coming back for more. In this post, we’ll share some useful tips for building a network of listeners eager for more.

1.Have a clear and consistent format

Having a clear and consistent format for your show will provide your audience with a sense of structure and stability. Whether you host a news-style show, a talk show, or a music-based show, as long as you stick to a format, your listeners will know what to expect. Keep in mind that humans seek patterns and familiarity in everything we do.

2.Interact with your audience

Engage with your listeners by reading and commenting on their comments, connecting on social media, or by taking calls during the show. Interactions make listeners feel that they are part of the conversation; involving them in the content in any way possible is essential for success. When your listeners feel like they’re part of the action, they’ll be more likely to tune in and stay engaged.

This will also help you understand your audience: who they are, what they really want from your show, and what excites them.

3.Provide Exclusive Content

Exclusive content is a great way to keep your listeners engaged, as it gives them a reason to tune in. This could be anything from a special interview with an influencer, to behind-the-scenes footage, to a sneak peek at upcoming projects. By offering exclusive content, you’ll give your listeners a reason to keep coming back.

4.Be authentic, lively, and energetic

Be unique, be yourself, and be passionate about your show. By showing your true personality, by picking songs you like, by discussing interesting topics on air, or by talking about news that excites you, your energy and passion will be contagious. If you’re lively and energetic in your delivery, your listeners will pick up on it and become invested in the show.

5.Get personal

Another way to keep your listeners engaged is to get personal with them and create an intimate relationship. Share your past experiences, wins and failures, thoughts and feelings on the topics you’re discussing. By being open and vulnerable, you’ll help create a deeper connection with your listeners, and they’ll be more likely to tune in and stay engaged.

6.(Sometimes) Mix things up

While consistency is key (see Tip #1), SOMETIMES it’s a good idea to mix things up on your show. This could mean changing up your format every so often, having guest hosts, or trying new segments. In other words, try to keep things fresh.

7.Be funny (if you can)

Humor can be a great ally in the challenge to create a nice bond with your audience. Everyone likes a good joke and there is no one out there who doesn’t want to be happy. Therefore, if you can make them laugh, they’ll be more likely to tune in and stay engaged. Just be careful not to cross the line into offensive or insensitive humor, as this can turn listeners off, hurting your reputation and eventually your station.

8.Start a blog

Finally, my last but super useful suggestion is to start a blog for your internet radio station. Write news about topics related to your station and shows. This will help listeners engage with your content and provide online content that you can share with guests and their friends (becoming free promotional material in the process).

And that’s it! By implementing the above mentioned strategies, you’ll be well on your way to creating an everlasting internet radio show that keeps your audience engaged and coming back for more.

Setting up an internet radio station can be fun, but getting all the necessary equipment can be expensive. A microphone is one of the most important things you need to get started. But with so many different microphones, how do you choose? There are many factors to consider when purchasing a budget mic, such as sound quality, portability, and durability. We will review these factors in this blog post and help you find the best budget mic for your needs.

What Type of Microphone is Best For Online Radio?

Microphones have been a staple in radio stations and studios for decades, but with the development of digital technology, they’re now available in a seemingly-endless variety of shapes and sizes.

There are three main types of microphones used in radio production:

  • Dynamic: A common type of microphone that uses a magnet and moving coil to produce sound; the diaphragm is usually made of aluminum or another low-mass material.
  • Condenser: Also called capacitor microphones, these function with two metal plates in proximity that create a higher capacitance as they get closer. The change in distance from the metal back plate to the diaphragm creates an electrical signal.
  • Ribbon: Also known as velocity microphones, this is a variation of a dynamic microphone. An electrically-conductive ribbon moves within a magnetic field and sound waves interact with the metal ribbon and create a voltage.

Dynamic and condenser microphones are standard in radio. Dynamic mics are rugged and can handle high sound levels without distortion; essentially, they are suitable for live applications. Especially if you will also use video recording software, you should have a good quality microphone. Condenser microphones are also popular for radio and voice recording, as they can provide a natural, crisp, accurate sound due to their higher sensitivity. Ribbon microphones are less common but still used in some recording studios for capturing vocals and instruments.

How Much Does a Decent Mic for Online Radio Cost?

When it comes to budget microphones, you don’t need to spend a fortune. Many budget mics are available for $200 or less, giving you an excellent sound range, no matter your needs. So, if you’re looking to start an online radio station, here are some of the best budget microphones out there.

Blue Microphones

Blue is a popular budget mic brand for online radio and offers excellent sound quality and durability. Blue has made a name for itself in the budget mic market, and the Yeti is one of its most popular models. Content creators can use them for podcasting, voice-overs, and even gaming. It’s also easy to remove from its mount and tripod for portability, making this mic a winning choice for online radio use.

Which Mic is Best For Live Streaming?

This microphone also features studio controls for headphones for convenience and an instant mute function if you need it.

What is a Good Starter Mic For Live Streaming?

You’ve been running your internet radio station for some time now and it has been an epic journey so far. Years passed without even noticing it. You’ve managed to create a strong community of listeners/fans who you consider family. However, in the last couple of months you feel that the station is more of a burden than a pleasure. What do you do? Have you considered selling your station? If you have, this post will walk you through the process.

1. Why sell your internet radio station

It can be hard to let go of your station. You feel like it’s your child. You saw your station growing from just an idea, a passion of yours to play music, to a strong brand that reaches thousands of listeners a month. How can you even think of selling your station, right? Here are a few reasons:.

  • You’re not passionate about your station any more

When someone starts an online radio station, it often is borne of passion. However, we tend to evolve and change as we age and therefore our interests and passions also change along the way. If your passion for online radio goes away, it’s a good idea to sell it.

  • You’re in need of money

Another common reason why you would consider selling your station is that you’re in need of money. Being in a difficult financial situation is a common reason why people look to sell valuable items. However, in such a case, you need to be sure that you won’t regret it in the future. So, if you have financial issues and you also don’t find pleasure in running your station anymore then, selling is a good way to go.

  • You need to save money

When you first started your online radio station you might not have thought about all of the costs that go into running it. These costs include your internet radio software, your website server, the licensing fees, rent, etc. If you haven’t monetised your station, then you just spend money and you have no profit.

If you don’t want to sell your station but you indeed need to save money then you may consider the following tips:

  • Pay annually and save

Pay annually to save monthly. Most internet radio software providers offer discounts to those who pay on an annual basis. For example, Airtime Pro offers 2 free months (equivalent to 16% off) on all annual plans. So, if you’re an Airtime Pro user, paying for the starter plan, and you choose to pay annually you will pay $33.29 instead of $39.95 per month.

  • Downgrade to a simpler plan

All this time you may pay for a plan that you don’t even need. It’s like paying for a 4-bedroom flat while using just one room. You’ll need to investigate your analytics to see how many listeners you have a day and how much storage you use. For example, you may need just 5 GB storage and you actually pay for 15 or you may get around 500 listeners a day and you pay for 1,000. So, you will want to downgrade your plan and if you see that you indeed need more features, then upgrade.

  • Monetise your station

If you don’t like the idea of selling your station then you just need to think about how to save money and at the same time make money out of your station. From selling radio ads and banner ads on your site to finding sponsors to sponsor your station or each show, there are various ways you can monetise your station. We’ve written an in-depth piece on this exact subject. Here are 13 ways to make money with your internet station.

2. How to find buyers

There are two ways to sell your internet radio station: by yourself or through a third-party agent or marketplace. If you are a natural salesperson, then the first option might sound ideal, as you will try to get the most money possible without spending on commission. However, keep in mind that this option can be tricky and time-consuming. If you already have an offer in hand then you could negotiate with that buyer for a deal that would make both of you happy. If you don’t have an offer, you will need to find potential buyers yourself and that’s not an easy task. If you decide to work with a private broker, then you can find a third-party marketplace, and the good news is that there are indeed some good options to choose from. Below are the two most popular marketplaces for buying and selling online businesses.

https://empireflippers.com/

You will need to sign up and start looking for potential buyers. Keep in mind that it might take some time before you find a buyer, and also until you actually make the deal and receive the money. The commission that you will need depends on your final sale price. They range from 5% to 15%.

Sell your station with Empireflippers.com

Empireflippers.com is a full service marketplace. They curate online businesses that meet their requirements and offer a dedicated team to take care of the website transfer. They won’t charge you a monthly fee, but instead they will charge a commission once your station is sold and the commission is deducted from the sales price. Empire Flippers only accepts online businesses that earn at least $500 per month in profit. The commission rates depend on the value of the business. For example:

If you sell your station for less than $700,000, the commission will be a flat 15% on the sale price.

If the deal closes between $700,000 and $5 million, then the commission will be reduced to 8% on the amount above $700,000 and below $5 million.

You can find out how much commission you will need to pay based on your estimated listing price via this commission calculator.

Here are the four steps of the sale process through Empireflippers.com.

  • Submit your station

You’ll first need to submit your internet station for sale to the marketplace. They will ask you a few questions about your business and then they will review your application.

  • Submission review & approval

You will need to wait for a few days until a review of your submission is completed. If they require additional information they will contact you. Otherwise, you will get notified that your application is successful.

  • Publish & Accept Offers

After your listing is successful they will promote your business to potential buyers and you will start receiving offers.

  • Help selling your station

You will receive help negotiating and structure deals that get you top value and a lightning-fast close. They help you in every step so that you close the deal. They even transfer the business to the buyer for you.

Sell your station with Flippa.com

Flippa is a peer-to-peer marketplace and it’s the most widely used marketplace for selling online businesses. They charge a listing fee as well as a 5% success fee payable when you sell your business. The platform offers various listing packages starting from $29, which include: 3-month duration marketplace listing, data integrations, and same-day support. Flippa lets you chat and negotiate directly with potential buyers. You can list your business yourself or ask Flippa’s team for help. They also promise to beat any success fees provided by other relevant marketplaces by 1%.

3. Determine the value of your internet radio station

You can find how much your online radio is worth through an online business valuation tool. Both of the marketplaces listed above offer such a tool, so if you’re curious to know the value of your internet station you can try both tools as they are free to use.

Flippa’s online business valuation tool

Empire Flippers Valuation tool

You will first need to provide some basic info and metrics about your internet radio station and they will then be able to let you know an asking price for your internet station.

Some key factors that will determine the value of your internet station are:

  • Daily visits/listeners
  • Domain authority score
  • Monthly revenue
  • Age of the domain
  • Bounce rate

You can either set an auction where you set a starting price and then you accept bids from buyers, or you set a sales price and you then negotiate directly with buyers.

4. Should you set an auction or selling price?

Setting an auction

If you choose to set an auction you will need to set a starting price and then you will start accepting bids from buyers. An auction is ideal if you want to sell your business quickly and you

want to create a “buzz” in your listing. However, if you choose this type of listing you will need to manage bids from lots of different bidders.

According to Flippa, the best way to maximize your selling price is to start with a low minimum bid and low reserve. There is no need to worry if your reserve price is not met after the auction ends because your listing will remain live on Flippa and you can still negotiate directly with potential buyers.

Asking a set fee

If you set a price, then you will get messages from potential buyers and negotiate directly with them. This type of listing is ideal in case you are not in a rush selling, meaning you are willing to wait to find the right buyer. Also, in this case you will not get less inquiries than in an auction.

5. How to prepare your radio station for the sale

Before selling your station you need to make sure that your station is a sellable asset.

  • Have a list of your station’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Having a clear list of all those procedures will help the buyer understand your business better and will also help with handing over your processes to them. You can create a document or how-to videos specifying all important aspects and procedures of your business.

  • Get your finances in order

The buyer will want to know if your station is profitable or not. Therefore you need to show them a financial overview of your business. If you’re serious about selling your business and you’re looking to close the best deal possible, you will need to cut back on any unnecessary expenses (see above) and perhaps monetise your station before reaching out to potential buyers. The ideal scenario is that you cut back on expenses at least 3 to 6 months before selling your station, so that your financial plan is more sustainable.

Conclusion

Selling your internet radio station is not the easiest thing to do. If you want to achieve a good deal, then you’ll need to plan wisely, and these tips and ticks should help you get the best price possible. Good luck!

When I was a kid, I always wanted to become a radio host – just like the hosts I listened to every day who sounded cool and fun. Sure, to be successful on air you need to have more than charisma; you also need to be lucky! But even without either of these things, with practice, it’s possible to excel. If there is one thing I’ve learned working in the internet radio business, hard work goes a long way. I’ve noticed it in my own shows. As time went on, I became increasingly more confident on air, so much so that I didn’t need to think a lot about what I had to say before turning on the mic to broadcast. Still, there are plenty of things you can do to transform yourself into a better radio host. And it’s never too early (or late) to learn. Whether you haven’t even started your internet radio station or you’re an experienced presenter, below are some of the most important questions (and answers) on how to be a great radio host and presenter.

What makes a good radio presenter?

Let’s consider what qualities make a good radio presenter. Think of your favourite radio hosts. What do they have in common that makes you love their shows? Below are some of the most common radio presenting skills or qualities that would be worth emulating. A good radio presenter is what I called CARFIK:

1. Confident

Confidence is one of the most attractive qualities in a person, and it can be a great quality for many aspects of life. As a successful radio host, you should be confident about the things you talk about on your show. Don’t question yourself every time you turn on the mic to speak. Nobody wants to listen to a shy presenter. It’s similar to courting. If a man approaches a woman and is shy and can’t form a single sentence, dinner and a movie are probably out of the question. But with confidence, the chances of a date go up. It’s the same with internet presenters. Confident presenters are more likely to attract more listeners, and entice them to come back for more. *By confidence I don’t mean arrogance. Confidence means you are not afraid to speak your mind on air and admit when you are wrong.

2. Authentic

From my point of view, this is the most important quality of all. It takes courage to be authentic, but being yourself is the most important gift you can give yourself and others. If you are authentic and you stand by your values and beliefs, people will respect you for who you truly are. That will make your life easier as you won’t need to try to be someone you are not (which, by the way, when people fake it, others feel it). Be passionate about the topics you present or the music you play and let the fans fall in love with you.

3. Respectful towards their listeners

Be respectful with your listeners and listen to their views and concerns even when you don’t agree with them. Respect towards your listeners creates a sense of trust and a healthy relationship. For example, if your show starts at 8 am, don’t be late, as this shows that you have no respect towards the people who listen to your show. If one day you arrive late, that’s OK; apologise and move on. Also, if you communicate with them on social media or on air, try to understand their point of view. Respect is about accepting the other person as they are and not trying to change them. A common mistake strong-willed radio presenters make is that they think they are better than their listeners and act like it. That creates separation between them and their listeners and soon enough they say something that is not accepted by the public and they experience a backlash. Read here the 10 most common mistakes people make with their internet radio station.

4. Friendly

Who doesn’t like a friendly person? One of the reasons people like specific radio hosts is because they feel close to them – like they truly know them. Being friendly and kind with your listeners is a great way to form a genuine connection. Talk to your audience like you know them. Be open and honest. Also, listening to the radio is mostly a solitary experience. Most listeners will listen to your show alone, so talk to them in the first person.

5. Interactive

Being interactive with your listeners on social media or through your radio station’s chat room is quite essential if you want to keep your listeners engaged and make them feel acknowledged. Nobody expects you to answer all the questions they ask, but you can selectively answer the most interesting ones. You can answer some questions live on air and other questions directly on social media or by chat. Interactivity is a key ingredient in forming a strong listener bond.

6. Knowledgeable (do your research on the topics you are covering or the interviewees you are hosting)

Being knowledgeable about the topics you cover builds credibility around your name and show. First, it’s good to understand your audience so that you are able to share information and music they will like. Second, always do research about the things you want to talk about on your show. Some would argue that a good radio presenter talks about the things that inspire them and plays the music they like. I completely agree. However, I also believe that it’s always good to know who your listener is and what they like most from your show, in order to offer them more of that! Finally, be sure to check out our guide on selecting interesting topics for your online radio programmes.

How can I improve my radio presenting skills?

A good technique is to realise what works and what doesn’t. One way to do that is to record your show and listen as if you are a fan. What didn’t you like? Maybe it’s the pace of your speech, a repetition of specific words or phrases that you weren’t aware of, the quality of the sound, or the sound of your voice. By listening to your own show you will find out all those things you need to improve in order to become the radio presenter you always dreamt of. One last thought: to be a good radio presenter you definitely need to have a good and clear sound. Your voice as well as the music that you play should be crisp, clear, and engaging. Consider using a good microphone and good quality MP3s. Experiment with the position of your microphone so that you find the best possible distance from the mic. If you have a condenser mic, it will pick up every noise you make with your mouth, so figure out the best distance from the mic and level of volume so that you minimise annoying sounds. That’s it! I hope you found the above tips useful and please feel free to share your own tips in the comments below!

At CJRU 1280AM, Ryerson University’s non-profit campus and community radio station broadcasting from Toronto, Canada, listener engagement is part of the station’s mission. From curated lectures and discussions to a “music discovery approach” that encourages and promotes new Canadian artists, CJRU is a hub of listening pleasure – and precisely the type of station Airtime Pro is proud to support.

CJRU has been using Airtime Pro to broadcast since 2013. The station is mostly run by volunteers – Ryerson students and community members – and airs a variety of music and talk-radio programming. Station managers pay particular attention to the training and onboarding of new volunteers, providing access to equipment and a media hub to share their work. They offer a wide range of volunteering opportunities including programming, production, outreach, web writing, live broadcasting, graphic design, and more.

We recently caught up with Elissa Matthews, CJRU’s Station Manager, to hear her insights and advice for other smaller college stations around the world looking for inspiration.

What were the steps you took to bring your station to where it is right now? Simply stated, what are the real secrets behind making your station successful?

I think time and consistency. We’ve been broadcasting online since 2013 and on our terrestrial signal since 2016. We continue to grow the station and add new shows and volunteers slowly.

What were the biggest challenges CJRU faced so far?

How to continue to broadcast throughout the pandemic. We’ve been able to find a way to keep all of our djs engaged and make programming from home.

How do you attract new listeners / grow your listenership?

Recently we’ve been putting more time into community outreach and making new partnerships with other arts and community organisations in Toronto. We’ve found that word of mouth and grassroots efforts have been the most effective for us.

What’s the internal decision process on programming, marketing, financing etc.?

We are a non-profit organisation with a board of directors. All major decisions go through our board of directors. Our station manager handles day-to-day, hands-on management of the station. Our Programme Director handles our programming schedule.

How have you monetised your station so far?

We sell advertising using traditional time blocks.

How has Airtime Pro helped your station and vision?

Airtime Pro has helped us create a back end to build our grid out on.

Which are your favourite Airtime Pro features that you utilise and take advantage of?

Having multiple users that can be assigned different permissions and assigned to specific programme blocks.

What tips would you give to people who want to start a campus radio station?

With dedicated people, a good idea, and a little bit of stable income you can do a lot. Look for stable sources of funding to keep you going.

Congratulations! You’ve just set up your Airtime Pro account and have begun to upload your favourite music. You’ve switched on your stream, told your friends to listen, and even carved out space in your schedule to flip the feed to “Live” on occasion.

And then …static. Where do you go from here?

The first thing you need to decide is whether your station will play just music or if you will host radio shows. In this post, we will offer some ideas for radio show topics so that you always have interesting topics to discuss on air. But first, a few more general pointers.

Think about your listeners

Before deciding on the format, think about who you want your listeners to be. Ideally, you will share similar interests and know what topics that they find interesting.

Understanding your ideal listener is essential for creating a long-term fanbase and for the success of your station. Once someone tunes in you need to capture their attention and create a relationship with your station. So, if you aim to start a radio station from scratch, think of your ideal listener and write down whatever comes to your mind in terms of consumer behaviours and demographics. What’s their genre? Where do they live? How old are they? What music do they like? What are their hobbies? What topics do they like to discuss? Knowing how to answer these questions will help you dive deeper into their preferences, highlighting trending themes and perspectives that you can later touch upon on your show. For inspiration, check out this cool Ted talk about getting to know your audience.

If you already have an internet radio station, you can analyse the current demographics of your listenership statistics. Airtime Pro provides easy access to built-in audience stats, such as location, number of listeners, and most popular shows. Google Analytics is another powerful tool that provides additional data. Finally, create social media accounts for your show, where you can engage listeners by asking them questions, create polls, or share ideas.

Choosing Interesting Talk Radio Topics

Once you have identified your ideal audience, or surveyed your current listeners, it’s time to choose the most interesting and creative talk show ideas to base your show on. Here are a few suggestions:

#1. Music

Music was made for radio. But more than good vibes, music makes for interesting and engaging content for on air discussion, covering all age groups and having a lot of angles one can consider. For example, your show could cover the release of a new song by a popular artist, the comeback of an old artist, or even a mere discussion over a new viral song. Any of these shows are bound to bring about some heated discussion and opinions.

#2. Hobbies

Almost everyone has a hobby and the passion to support it, which is why they make great topics for radio. Every hobby – from gardening to coin collecting – has a fanbase. Tapping into these networks will help draw attention to your show and even inspire others to join the bandwagon.

#3. Health

This is the age of fitness, or as some call it, personal and environmental “sustainability.” Tap into these discussions and start an engaging radio show with conversations related to managing one’s health and maintaining a healthy routine.

#4. Travel

Every now and then, it is important to bring a little excitement and adventure into the radio segment. Travelling is a fun radio topic, paving the way for discussions on travel experiences, tips, or even guests from different parts of the world to shed light on their culture and tourism in their own slice of heaven.

#5. Education

If your audience includes students, education is a great radio topic. To make this oft-vilified topic interesting, however, your show could dive deeper into new languages, cultures, or even into the basics of time management. We all procrastinate and definitely need to be educated on how to avoid it.

#6. Lifestyle

Tips on how to manage life’s daily activities – from picking a wardrobe to exercising – never go out of fashion. Listeners everywhere are hungry for ideas on every day living, making lifestyle an interesting late-night radio topic for all ages.

#7. Trending Events

Everyone has an opinion, but what drives engagement on the radio is bringing those opinions into a public forum for debate or discussion. Making people feel involved and accepted will create a more engaged audience.

#8. Entertainment

Entertainment is a vast field that inspires many interesting radio show topics. For instance, films and TV Shows never lose their popularity. As a host you could review popular shows, personally reflect on the latest trends, or invite guests to comment on what everyone is watching.

How to make it engaging?

The topic itself is not what makes a radio show worth listening to. Listeners want to be engaged, informed, and entertained. That’s where your personality, style, and preparedness comes in.

Do your homework. If you are discussing a song, research the artist. Be prepared to offer interesting insights that will pull the debate forward. Another good tactic is to introduce comedy into your segments, breaking up the serious stuff with some levity.

A few other radio content ideas:

  1. Talk about specialist topics with niche audiences, like extraterrestrials. After all, conspiracy theories are very entertaining.
  2. Give relationship or lifestyle advice through live call-ins. But remember: be kind!
  3. Bring in top-tier guests to discuss trending topics. Comb through your network to find guests with large social-media followings, who can then amplify your content by sharing it on their networks.
  4. Hosting a question and answer session, during which live callers can interact with each other (but have that mute button ready!).
  5. A radio show based on humorous stories and topics can also be a big hit. Think of funny radio talk show topics to discuss on your show.

Creative Names for Talk Shows

Now that you have an idea of the topics to talk about on your radio show and a few tips to make your shows interesting, it’s time to come up with a creative name. Here are few steps to help:

1. Brainstorm

Depending on the nature of your talk show, identify a few words or phrases that are often associated with the topic.

2. Shortlist

After forming an extensive list of names, reflect over each name in terms of recall, meaning, significance, and uniqueness. This will help you filter out a few creative names for your show.

3. Feedback

Filter your shortlisted names more by asking for feedback from peers and family.

4. Availability

After you have selected the name, make sure to check whether it’s available. Google the names to see if they are already in use. And if it is, start over!

Nowadays, starting an internet radio station from home is easy. In the past, an aspiring radio host needed to shell out lots of money on equipment and spend hours researching tools and techniques. But with internet radio software like Airtime Pro, launching your station takes less than 5 minutes.

In a previous post we published one of the web’s most detailed guides to starting an internet radio station from home. In this post, we will simplify the process and break down the essentials to start broadcasting.

Tip 1: Save money on your equipment

If you’re on a budget, don’t buy new equipment. You can find all that you need for a basic setup on most consumer-to-consumer e-shops.

You will need a laptop or a computer, a USB mic, and a pair of headphones. Have a look through Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Gumtree, or other local online classifieds sites for cheap, second-hand gear that won’t break the bank.

And if money is no object (lucky you!) check out our more sophisticated setup guide here : 10 Essential Pieces of Equipment for Online Radio Newbies Looking to Become Broadcasting Pros.

Tip 2: Finding news to share

If you aim to do live broadcasting and sharing news, listen up: It takes a lot of time, effort, and planning to do it right. Here are a few ways to turn your living room into a newsroom:

  • Sign up to the RSS feeds of the blogs and news sites that you follow. This way, you’ll gather content when it’s published, and be able to keep it organised.
  • Use Feedly to subscribe to a variety of news and blog feeds, and create lists to organise your content.
Use Tweetdeck for gathering content and news from Twitter. This free platform allows you to see all the content related to the search terms you enter.
Create Google Alerts for specific search terms and receive email alerts whenever there is a new blog post or article online around that topic.

Tip 3: Make use of podcasting to reach a wider audience and attract new listeners

Podcasts have been around for almost two decades, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, the global podcasting market has grown significantly. Our internet broadcasting software Airtime Pro offers a built-in podcast feed as well as podcast hosting, making it easy for you to create podcasts and distribute them to an ever-growing online audience hungry for on-demand audio content. If you want to learn more, check out our guide: “Podcasting with Our Airtime Pro Internet Radio Software is Easy”.

Tip 4: Make It Collaborative

Maybe you’ve heard the wisdom of American author and disability rights activist Helen Keller, who said: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” The same logic applies to online broadcasting. While it’s possible to run an internet radio station by yourself, it can be more fun and fulfilling to collaborate with others. Among Airtime Pro’s long list of great features is that it allows you to add other DJs and Program Managers no matter where they are in the world. All they need is an internet connection.

Also, consider inviting and interviewing interesting personalities on your radio show. Think of friends or people you know who are experts in their field. People love to be valued and heard and, from my own experience as a radio host, I can tell you that most of the people I have invited as guests were happy and excited to take part in the show. If you want to take it a step further, contact influencers – anyone in your niche who is an authority on a topic. This could be anyone from local music bands and musicians, the owner of a local club or music venue, or local bloggers and personalities. Think outside the box!

Tip 5: Create a media kit

If you’re looking to make money out of your internet station, it’s a good idea to have a media kit that you can share with potential sponsors. This document will include all the important information needed to convince potential sponsors to promote their brand, product, and services through your station. Whenever you are in negotiations with sponsors and funders, you’ll be able to send them your media kit, which will make it easier for them, and help you look professional.

]]>

There is lots of confusion around the topic ‘starting an online radio station’ and we are here to bring clarity. In this post we will bust 7 common myths and misconceptions so you can have more confidence about embarking on the internet radio journey.

1. I need a big budget to buy equipment

Many people think that they need super professional equipment in order to start an internet radio station. In fact, you can start with very little investment. You could of course spend thousands of dollars for studio equipment but if you’re on a limited budget you could start with less than $200. For a simple setup you will need a laptop/computer, a USB mic, a pair of headphones, and an internet connection. You will also need an internet radio broadcasting software like Airtime Pro with plans starting from as low as $10/month. Below is an example of a basic set up to help you with your research:

Audio Interface: Behringer ZB791 UMC22 Audiophile 2×2 USB Audio Interface: $58.99
Mic: NASUM Computer Microphone: $24.99
Mixing Desk: Behringer XENYX 1202 Mischpult: $79.6
Headphones: OneOdio DJ Headphone: $32.99
Software: Airtime Pro Hobbyist: $9.95 / per month

Total cost: $206.52

Be sure to check out our guide: 10 Essential Pieces of Equipment for Online Radio Newbies Looking to Become Broadcasting Pros.

2. I need to be a professional radio DJ to start an internet radio station

You don’t need to have any experience. You can start by playing your favourite music. You can use jingles to make your programme sound more professional. Our friends at Music Radio Creative offer some free DJ drops and jingles. If you want to broadcast live and have a killer radio show then it might take some time till you become a superstar. Find your ‘voice’ and style, be yourself and play nice music.

3. I need to have my own website to have an online station

You don’t need to have a website to start an online radio station. Internet radio software such as Airtime Pro provides a unique radio page for your radio station. That page has all the essential tools you need to get started. You can place your logo, your radio widget, your social media icons, your station’s schedule and track artwork. The main advantage with this option is that you don’t have to build a website from scratch which would take time, effort and money to build and to maintain (website theme, domain name, hosting, etc). At the same time, it’s important to know that the radio page is not fully customisable. For example, if you build your own website you will be able to show ads and make money, implement a chat so that you can communicate with your listeners, use a blog to share news with your audience, etc.

In order to reach a wider audience you can list your station in online radio directories like Streema and TuneIn.

4. I need a proper studio

That’s another common misconception. People think that in order to run an internet station you need to have a soundproof studio and expensive setup with a mixing console with plenty of knobs and super professional microphones. As we mentioned in point 1, you can broadcast from the comfort of your home. The equipment you will need is: your laptop, a decent internet connection and a microphone.

5. I need to have technical knowledge to start an online radio station

That would be the case some years ago. However, nowadays there are plenty of radio broadcasting solutions out there that make it super easy for anyone to start an internet radio without a hassle. For example, if you decide to start your station with Airtime Pro, you won’t need to have any technical knowledge whatsoever and it will take you less than five minutes to set up your station and broadcast live. Here is a short video by Mike Russell from Music Radio Creative that shows you how to do exactly that.

6. Internet Stations don’t make money

That’s simply not true. There are plenty of ways you can monetise your station and make money from it. The truth is that it won’t happen from day one and it will take time and effort from your side to grow your listenership and make money with your station.

Check out our blog post on how to make money with your station.

7. I will need to broadcast 24/7

You don’t need to be on top of your station 24/7. Airtime Pro makes it super easy to create and schedule playlists and plan for months in advance with the calendar management function. Whenever you want, you can easily switch between pre-recorded and live programming. Also, the AutoDJ functionality helps you fill the gaps in your program schedule without the need to choose songs.
